The psychology of Visual Effects

The always excellent Rob Ager takes a look at the difference in the visual effects from The Thing. Comparing the original to the remake is always something to be taken with a pinch of salt. After all, everything is different, except the story. In some cases, even the story is so different from the original that the remake isn’t really recognisable. Sometimes this is due to a different cast and crew, sometimes the budget has been increased by a huge amount. Sometimes, the whole film feels different in spite of it being a scene for scene remake. So why is that? In a film like The Thing, the visual effects play a huge role. So how does advancements in VFX and a bigger budget play with the psychology of the film?
