Get Your Bokeh On
Admittedly, we might not all have the fancy lenses used in modern filmmaking. We might be making our short film with a lens that your Grandad gave you 10 years ago. It’s doesn’t really fill you with joy when we’re talking about using shallow depth of field to tell a story. What we do have though, is the ability to understand why using shallow focus can be a great tool for filmmakers to create a sense of foreboding, dread, enclosure and to add drama to the scene. Which, as The Nerdwriter explains, is done extremely well in The Handmaid’s Tale.
