Cinematography through the eyes of Cinematographers

Being a cinematographer is a dream job for a lot of people. In fact, it’s not even a job for the lucky few who make it to the top of their game, it’s their hobby and their passion that they happen to get paid to do. There are a lot of photographers on Instagram, but not too many cinematographers, unless you’re looking for them, which we did. We found these nine awesome cinematographers, working on films like Black Swan, The Revenant and Gravity to name a few.

Learn Cinematography

These accounts don’t necessarily show you what it’s like on set as a cinematographer or what the job entails (obviously, it’s pictures) but if you want to be a cinematographer, it helps to know what kind of lives they lead. The following nine profiles will give you a very varied view of life through the eyes of cinematographers. Anyway, enough of this waffle, let’s take a look!

Reed Morano – @reedmorano

With over 45 credits in the filmmaking world, Reed is a great place to start this list. She has worked on films like Frozen River, Kill Your Darlings, and The Skeleton Twins. She was the youngest members of  the American Society of Cinematographers when she joined in 2013 (which is always a good hint that they’re going to do well). Most recently, Reed has moved into directing with her first feature Meadowlands. Her Instagram showcases her amazing eye for capturing natural light, a skill for any cinematographer.

Emmanuel Lubezki – @chivexp

Okay, so we have moved Emmanuel Lubezki down the list a little, to give some others a chance. He is up for the Oscar for Best Achievement in Cinematography this year for The Revenant and that’s following back to back wins for Birdman and Gravity. So we certainly think that means this is definitely an Instagram to check out and follow. You’ll get great shots on location, behind the scenes images and a special look at the world through his eyes.

Congrats B…man.

Rodrigo Prieto – @rpstam

Rodrigo has worked on some of the biggest films of the last couple of decades; The Wolf of Wall Street, 8 Mile, Babel, Brokeback Mountain and Argo, to name just a few. Hailing from Mexico, Rodrigo clearly has something special to offer the world of Cinema. We love his Instagram, it’s full of filmmaking goodness and shots that only a cinematographer could take.

Rachel Morrison – @rmorrison

One of the big success stories over the past couple of years has been the film Dope. Rachel worked on this film and hasn’t slowed down. She has also worked on Fruitvale Station and Cake, among other things. She also happens to be in the elite few cinematographers that have an Emmy nomination, not bad eh?

Matthew Libatique – @libatique

Libatique can be seen in the credits for a whole host of films and can always be found on the set of Darren Aronofsky film. He has worked with Aronofsky on his films Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, and recently Noah. Which are all films that have stand out cinematography, we think you’ll agree. His talents don’t stop there though, he worked on some of the first Marvel films, Iron Man and Iron Man 2. Most recently he has worked on the N.W.A film, Straight Outta Compton.

Yoni Brook – @yonibrook

Yoni was was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Valley of Saints, an Indian film that won the World Dramatic Audience Award at Sundance. He may not be as well known as some of the cinematographers on this list but he certainly has an Instagram page to get the creative juices inside any cinematographer going.

Ben Smithard – @bensmitharddop

Occasionally you’ll come across a character in the world of TV and Film that you absolutely love. Here at the school, we absolutely love Alan Partridge and as Ben Smithard was the DOP on Alpha Papa, we are obliged to love him and his work too. That isn’t really too hard, as he’s really very good at what he does. He’s also worked on Belle and The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and his Instagram is full of beautiful images, as you’d expect from a cinematographer. It could do with more Alan Partridge though.

Phedon Papamichael – @papa2

Phedon was the director of photography for 3:10 to Yuma, The Descendants,  and this year’s Oscar-nominated, Nebraska and is a frequent collaborator with director Alexander Payne. Phedon hails from the Greek island of Athens and loves to take a beautiful pictures of life, family and his work. You can certainly see the cinematographer in him shining through, I bet he agonises over some of these shots.

Andrew Dunn – @cameracinema

Last but by no means least, is Andrew Dunn. Andrew is a British cinematographer who has worked on a huge variety of films. From Crazy, Stupid, Love to The Perks of Being a Wallflower. From Hitch to his most recent work, Bridget Jones’s Baby. His Instagram continues to showcase this huge variety in style through his love of film and life. Certainly a cinematographer worth checking out and giving a follow.
